Nagarkurnool, Telangana – February 22, 2025: A section of the under-construction Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel collapsed early Saturday morning, trapping eight workers under debris. Rescue operations led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are currently in full swing as authorities race against time to save the stranded workers.

What Happened?

The incident occurred around 8:30 AM when a sudden influx of water and soil caused the tunnel roof to collapse. The disaster took place at a depth of 14 kilometers inside the tunnel near Domalapenta in Nagarkurnool district. While 52 workers managed to escape, eight remain trapped under debris, prompting a massive rescue operation.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Rescue teams have advanced approximately 13.5 kilometers into the tunnel using locomotives and conveyor belts. However, a 200-meter section filled with debris is obstructing access to the trapped workers. Authorities are working tirelessly to remove the debris and ensure the workers’ safety.

Challenges in the Operation

  • Tunnel Depth: The collapsed section is located deep inside, making it difficult for heavy machinery to reach.
  • Unstable Ground: The geological conditions make the debris removal process slow and dangerous.
  • Lack of Communication: The trapped workers’ exact location is still uncertain, further complicating rescue efforts.

Who Are the Trapped Workers?

The missing workers include:

  • A project engineer and a field engineer from Uttar Pradesh
  • Four laborers from Jharkhand
  • Two machine operators from Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has assured full support and reached out to Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy to coordinate rescue efforts.

Government Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to CM Revanth Reddy, offering complete central government support. A 96-member NDRF team, along with the Indian Army’s Engineer Task Force, has been deployed for the rescue mission. Additionally, the Singareni Collieries Company has sent specialized personnel and equipment to assist in operations.

Background of the SLBC Project

The Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project, started in 2007, is designed to provide irrigation and drinking water to the region. However, delays and technical challenges have plagued the construction. The project resumed work just four days before the collapse after a long hiatus. 34 kilometers of the total 42-kilometer tunnel were completed before this tragic incident.

What Happens Next?

Authorities are working around the clock to clear the debris and rescue the trapped workers safely. Updates on their condition and further developments will follow as rescue efforts continue.
