New Delhi, February 22, 2025: Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the second Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, and the official order was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on Saturday.

Historic Appointment

Das’s appointment marks a significant shift in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), as it is the first time two individuals will serve as principal secretaries simultaneously. He will work alongside Pramod Kumar Mishra, who has been the Principal Secretary since September 2019. Das’s tenure will be co-terminus with that of the Prime Minister or until further orders.

A Distinguished Career

Shaktikanta Das, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1980 Tamil Nadu cadre, has an extensive background in economic policy and governance. He served as the 25th Governor of the RBI from December 2018 to December 2024, playing a key role in managing India’s economy through critical challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Before his tenure at the RBI, Das held key positions in the Ministry of Finance, including Secretary of the Department of Revenue and the Department of Economic Affairs. He was instrumental in implementing major economic reforms such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the demonetization initiative in 2016.

Global Recognition

Das has been widely recognized for his leadership in the financial sector. He was ranked among the top three central bankers globally for two consecutive years by the US-based Global Finance magazine, receiving an ‘A+’ rating in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2024.

Responsibilities in the PMO

As Principal Secretary-2, Das is expected to bring his vast economic expertise to the Prime Minister’s Office. He will provide strategic guidance on critical financial matters, economic policymaking, and governance reforms. His experience as India’s G20 Sherpa and a member of the 15th Finance Commission will also aid in shaping India’s economic policies on a global scale.

Looking Ahead

Das’s appointment comes at a crucial time as India navigates global economic challenges and domestic financial reforms. His expertise in macroeconomic policies, fiscal governance, and regulatory frameworks will play a pivotal role in shaping India’s future economic direction under the Modi administration.
