Maharashtra-Karnataka Tensions: MSRTC Suspends Bus Services After Attack

Maharashtra has temporarily suspended all state-run bus services to Karnataka after an attack on a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus in Chitradurga, Karnataka. The decision follows rising tensions between the two states over ongoing linguistic and border disputes.

Why Were MSRTC Buses Suspended?

On Friday night, a group of pro-Kannada activists allegedly attacked an MSRTC bus and blackened the face of the driver, Bhaskar Jadhav. The shocking incident has triggered a strong response from Maharashtra authorities. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik immediately ordered the suspension of bus services until the Karnataka government takes a clear stand on the issue.

“We cannot risk the safety of our passengers and staff. Until we receive an assurance from Karnataka authorities, MSRTC buses will not operate beyond the Maharashtra border,” said Sarnaik.

Impact on Commuters

The suspension of MSRTC services has left thousands of daily passengers stranded, particularly those traveling for work, education, and medical needs. Many commuters are now relying on private transport, which has led to increased fares and inconvenience.

At the same time, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has also restricted its services to Maharashtra, halting operations at the Koganolli checkpoint near the border.

Retaliation in Maharashtra

In response to the attack, tensions escalated in Maharashtra, particularly in Kolhapur, where Shiv Sena (UBT) workers vandalized a Karnataka-registered bus. Protesters tied saffron flags to the vehicle and blackened its windshield, further intensifying the dispute.

The Maharashtra-Karnataka Border Dispute

The strained relations between Maharashtra and Karnataka are rooted in the long-standing border dispute over Belagavi (formerly Belgaum) and 814 Marathi-speaking villages that Maharashtra claims should be part of its territory. The conflict dates back to 1957, following the linguistic reorganization of states.

What’s Next?

Authorities from both states are urging residents to maintain peace and avoid any action that could further escalate tensions. Political leaders are expected to hold discussions to address the ongoing issue and restore normalcy in inter-state transport services.

For now, MSRTC buses will remain suspended, and passengers are advised to make alternate travel arrangements until further notice.
