India is once again witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases. As of May 31, 2025, the total number of active cases in the country has reached 3,395. The Health Ministry has advised people not to panic but to remain cautious. In this article, we will know what is the current status of COVID-19, what are its symptoms, which states are getting the most cases, what measures can be taken to avoid it, and will also share some important information related to the epidemic.

Current status of COVID-19 in India:

Recently, there has been a sudden increase in COVID-19 cases. While very few cases were coming in India in the last few weeks, now the number of cases is increasing once again. While there were only 257 active cases on May 22, this number has increased to 3,395 on May 31.

According to the Health Ministry, in most cases the infection is mild and patients are recovering at home. But in some serious cases, hospitalization is required.

State-wise COVID-19 status:

  • Kerala: 1,336 active cases
  • Maharashtra: 467 active cases (68 new cases, of which 30 from Mumbai and 15 from Pune)
  • Delhi: 375 active cases (81 new cases and 2 deaths)
  • Gujarat: 265 active cases
  • Karnataka: 234 active cases (1 death)
  • West Bengal: 205 active cases

  • Uttar Pradesh: 117 active cases

It is clear from these figures that some states in South and West India are the worst affected. However, cases are gradually being reported in North India as well.

Recent deaths:

4 people have died of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh have reported one death each. A 60-year-old woman died in Delhi who was suffering from intestinal obstruction and was found COVID positive. These incidents show that people with pre-existing diseases are at greater risk from this virus.

Threat of new variants:

According to health experts, new variants like NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 have emerged. These variants are more infectious than before, but have been seen to be less severe so far. However, experts believe that it is very important to be cautious and get tested on time.

Symptoms of COVID-19:

The symptoms of COVID-19 can be similar to those of the common cold. These include:

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to get tested for COVID immediately so that appropriate treatment can be started in time.

What to do and what not to do:

What to do:

  • Wear a mask in public places
  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water

  • Avoid crowds
  • Get tested immediately if symptoms appear

Vaccination status:

The government has vaccinated most of the population so far, but the number of people taking booster doses has declined. The Health Ministry has advised the elderly, sick persons and health workers to take booster doses.

The booster dose further strengthens immunity, which helps in fighting new variants. If you have not taken the booster dose yet, then go to the nearest health center and take it as soon as possible.

Take care of mental health:

The COVID-19 pandemic affects people not only physically but also mentally. Staying at home for a long time, fear of infection, job or financial problems can increase mental stress. In such a situation, it is important to:

  • Stay connected with family and friends (via phone or online)
  • Practice yoga and meditation
  • Get good sleep and eat a balanced diet
  • Do not spend too much time on social media
  • Seek help from a counselor or doctor if needed

Preparedness for the future:

Every wave of COVID-19 has taught us how important it is to be prepared.

  • Always keep some essential medicines, oximeter, thermometer and mask available at home
  • Promote hygiene practices at office and school level
  • RT-PCR tests and other testing facilities should be promoted

Conclusion:

Although the current wave of COVID-19 is not as severe as before, it should still not be taken lightly. Vigilance is necessary due to the spread of new variants. Wearing masks, maintaining social distance and getting tested on time are as important today as they were before. The government and health agencies are monitoring the situation, but vigilance of the general public is most important.

We have to understand that the corona virus is still not completely eradicated. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every person to protect not only himself but also his family and society.

Stay healthy, stay alert and stay safe.
