Devendra Fadnavis Clarifies Stance on RSS Leader’s Marathi Remark: ‘Anyone Who Lives in Mumbai is a Mumbaikar’

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has stepped in to clear the air regarding the ongoing controversy sparked by RSS leader Sunil Deodhar’s recent statement on the Marathi identity in Mumbai. Fadnavis asserted that anyone who lives in Mumbai and loves the city is a Mumbaikar, irrespective of their language or background.

The issue arose after Sunil Deodhar reportedly made remarks suggesting that only Marathi-speaking people should be considered the true residents of Mumbai. His statement stirred widespread debate, with many criticizing the view as divisive in a city known for its vibrant multicultural society.

Reacting to the controversy, Fadnavis emphasized the inclusive nature of Mumbai. “Mumbai is not just a city for one community or language. It is a city built by the hard work of people from different regions, languages, and cultures. Anyone who lives here, respects the city, and contributes to its growth is a Mumbaikar,” he stated.

Political parties like the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress were quick to criticize the RSS leader’s comments, accusing the organization of attempting to stoke linguistic and communal divisions. The issue has gained momentum as political campaigns heat up ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Fadnavis urged leaders to refrain from making statements that could divide society. “Mumbai thrives on its unity and diversity. We should focus on the development of the city rather than engaging in politics that separates people,” he added.

Mumbai has long been a melting pot of cultures, with people from across India calling it home. The city has built its identity through a mix of languages, traditions, and communities working together.

As the elections draw closer, the Marathi identity debate is likely to remain a sensitive topic. However, Fadnavis’ message highlights the importance of unity over division in preserving Mumbai’s unique spirit.
