Security Forces Report Progress, More Surrenders Expected

Imphal, Manipur – February 23, 2025: In response to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla’s seven-day ultimatum to surrender illegal weapons, multiple groups have started complying by handing over arms to authorities. This move marks a critical step in efforts to restore peace and order in the conflict-hit state.

Weapons Surrendered Across Several Districts

Reports indicate that 16 weapons, including AK-47s, M-16 rifles, INSAS rifles, grenade launchers, and ammunition, have been surrendered in Churachandpur district. Similar actions have been reported in Kakching and Kangpokpi, where armed groups and individuals have voluntarily handed over firearms.

The Governor’s directive, issued on February 20, 2025, assured that those who surrender weapons within the stipulated timeframe will not face punitive action. However, after the deadline, authorities have warned of strict enforcement measures against those in possession of illegal arms.

Security Forces and Community Engagement

To encourage compliance, security forces have been working closely with local leaders and civil society organizations to urge individuals to return looted or illegally acquired weapons. The initiative aims to de-weaponize the state and prevent further violence.

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a coalition of Imphal-based civil society groups, has requested an extension of the surrender deadline. They argue that more time is needed to facilitate community-level discussions and ensure broader participation in the process.

Government’s Stand and Future Actions

Governor Bhalla has emphasized the government’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and has called on all communities to cooperate in the surrender drive. He stated that the initiative is essential for the security of the people and the long-term stability of Manipur.

As the deadline nears, more surrenders are expected, and authorities are closely monitoring compliance. Security forces remain on high alert, and stringent measures are planned for those who fail to surrender illegal weapons within the given timeframe.
